SOUND SUPERVISION --

Richard Achor working away in Clermont. SFX, Foley, ADR, about finished. I never knew how much sound was added to production sound (like most of it). The foley makes the film come to life in a way even I am awestruck. So many of the sounds you think the production mics got were distorted or unusable so foley has to be the saving grace. It was for us. Truly adding depth and dimension to the environment and performances.

CINEWORKS TRANSFER ---

I returned from Miami where I saw the film projected for the first time on the big screen. We were color correcting and it looked beautiful. For the past 8 months I have only seen it on a television size monitor or on editing quipment so this was a neat moment. The film looked stunning, I was amazed. It works in the bigger format, much relief.

PAUL SIRMONS ANNOUNCED AS FLORIDA FILM COMMISSIONER

PAUL SIRMONS is now the head of the state Film Commission. Paul was selected above many other candidates and handpicked by Governor Jeb Bush to run our film department. Paul has been a mentor of mine having taught me so much about the nuts and bolts of filmmaking. He will be missed as we complete the film here in Orlando, but the state is better off for having such a knowledgable person in such an influential position.

Wednesday, July 27, 2005

CINEWORKS DEAL DONE --

The deal is done at Cineworks and we will be doing our transfer/scan/and conform in Miami beginning AUG 8th. This will be finished no later than Sept. 9th allowing us to embark on the final mix.

Friday, July 22, 2005

ORLANDO FILM FESTIVAL

Last night our film was introduced by the OFF in downtown Orlando for a private screening this Fall. The hopes are making this a gala event, black tie, loads of fun. OFF is going to be based out of the Plaza theatres in the new downtown building on Orange and Pine Street beginning in the Fall of 2006. The Board of Directors consists of Roger Chapin, Brett Jaffee, Jurt Bauerle, and Picton Warlow. All exciting stuff and "The Way Back Home" is a perfect fit for kicking this festival off.

NEARING THE FINISH LINE

We are getting very close. Our sound supervisor and I went to LA to post all the actors so the dialogue has all been cleaned up. We got all the actors to come in and do some recording, and for them it was the first time they got to see what Paul and I have been doing with their performances. It was a treat to watch their responses.

We will be heading down to Miami for the transfer to High Def. in the next few weeks. The film will then be ready for the final mix which we plan on doing at Full Sail in their Premiere new screening room. The final mix consists of laying in all the sound elements including music and any other sounds one hears. It is literally the final thing that gets done.

Los Angeles Film School

Just returned from meeting with CEO Diana Kessler at LA Film School located right on Sunset across from the Arclight in Hollywood. A little history....Full Sail here in Orlando has recently gone into business with them and they, like Full Sail, are being very kind to our little film. Diana has offered us usage of her 340 seat theater equiped with all the newest forms of film projection, HD, 35, everything. It will be used by us for Distribution screenings and special events for the film in LA.

LOCKED PICTURE ---

Last night we locked the film. Basically what this means is that we have settled on the exact look of the film and will not be adding or subtracting any of the shots. This has been a creative week for OLIVER PETERS (our editor), Paul, and myself. We have been in the editing room working this film over and over, watching each scene, dealing with pacing, rhythm, story arcs, buttons, cuts, fade-ins, fade-outs, you name it. And it all coalesced last night. The film sprang to life in front of our very eyes. As the writer, I do not know what to feel as something big happened last night, but I don't know exactly what it was. I couldn't really sleep last night...I just have butterflies and...I just don't know what....honestly.

MUSIC DAYS W/GRAMMY AWARD WINNING ARTISTS --

Mucho hapenning. Will Baker and Pete Woodruff are in studio at FULL SAIL working on composing the score. I want to tell you a little about these guys. I met them through their Managers Theresa Paige and Johnny Wright who manage the likes of Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Backstreet Boys, and on and on. Will and Pete are in-house Producers at WEG (Wright Entertainment Group) and have produced songs for films like Mel Gibson's "We Were Soldiers" and Jennifer Garner's "Electra." Will read the script, seemed to respond, and spoke to me about what type of music he heard for our film. He thought the feel, the sound was "soulful and spiritual" and he presented me some songs by a number of artists he represents. The artist that blew me away was a young woman named SONJII who's sound is so unique and uplifting. She is a beautiful young artist, based in Pittsburgh, who plays acoustic guitar like nobody's business. She has a smile like no other and a spirit you just want to be around. I knew at the moment I heard the first bars to her songs that tshe must be involved in "The Way Back home." And she is....along with WILL and PETE.

Composers Will Baker and Pete Woodruff in Studio--

Will and Pete have set up camp in the Full Sail mixing studio. They will be laying down all the stems and working through the film. I have heard early returns from their work and i am just blown away. They are right on track, right on track. I plan on stopping by and listening to some of their stuff today after Paul and I go through the film again and take copious notes as we add in the pickup shots from this past weekend.

Tuesday, May 03, 2005

MORE SHOOTING --

The gang got together last week for pickup shots in Sanford. WE got 23 shots in 10 hours, just cranking. We needed more local flavor from the town and I am confidant we got it. Reza was here, great to see him, and he is in negotiations to direct a 45 million dollar film in Turkey this Summer which is fantastic.

ROLLINS MARKETING MEETING ---

Lisa, Daryl, and Mike are petitioning their Dean to continue on with "The Way Back Home".... to really guide and assist Paul and I with our distribution strategy. This is where most independants go awry for various reasons... but these guys are really stepping to the plate for us. It invigorates Paul and I as we morph into the next phase of this process and gives us immediate "things to do and think about" as we continue on with the editing process. Thanks ROLLINS and PROFESSOR MARK JOHNSON for lending us your time on a Saturday afternoon.

Thursday, March 10, 2005

POST PRODUCTION STEPS ---

Chase Heavener has been working diligently with the poster and making great strides. I am really pleased with the direction he is taking with it and we plan on sitting down next week(Paul, Chase and I)... and all get on the same page. The poster is so important for marketing and distribuition and we want to explore all possibilities and be sure that the poster captures the essence of the film.

Paul is putting together a mini budget for our PICKUP SHOTS in Sanford and getting some pricing on an interesting OPENING TITLE SEQUENCE which would consist of, get this, a HELICOPTER, a BUS, an AIRBOAT, and LV's TRUCK!!!! Keep your fingers crossed. THis could look amazing if Paul can work wonders and get FAVORS, FAVORS, FAVORS....for us the poor, weak, yet magnicficently "grandiose thinking" filmmakers.

Sunday, February 27, 2005

DIRECTORS CUT ---

Yesterday AM we showed Reza's cut on the big screen. It was rather amazing. Will Baker attended and he and Reza were brainstorming the different sounds they heard in different places. All are working well together and we are very pleased with where we are today.

Tuesday, February 22, 2005

CINEWORKS MEETING with Vinnie Hogan ---

Paul, Alan, and I met with our POST HOUSE CINEWORKS in Miami today. VINNIE HOGAN and CINEWORKS are the best place for our film "The Way Back Home." Vinnie is a true Florida filmmaker and his love for this area, his desire to further develop infrastructure in Florida, and his thoughts about the future of our film were far more than I expected when I went to meet him. He is an impressive individual and anybody thinking of doing post work in Florida, CINEWORKS IS THE HOUSE!!!!!!

Sunday, February 13, 2005

LOST IN THE EDITING ROOM ---

We are almost finished with our second pass of the film. THe goal is to get the film b/w 90 and 95 minutes. The cut is looking fabulous and and Paul and I are very pleased.

Thursday, February 03, 2005

MARKETING MEETING -- 2/2

Paul, Alan and I met with the "whippersnappers" from Rollins last night. They have amazing energy and ideas which will only serve this film and my company, BACK HOME PRODUCTIONS, INC. We discussed taking this film out into the marketplace utilizing our greatest resource, our love for FLORIDA. There are so many creative ways to introduce this film and we are exploring each and every one of them.

Chase Heavener has assumed the awesome responsibility of the film's Poster. The artwork, font, vision necessary to assit in the marketing. I feel so fortunate to have someone as knowledgable and interested in this arena...b/c it is completely foreign to me. I can assist and explain what I envisioned for the poster, but I need someone to surprise me and take it to the next level. Chase, you're that guy!!!!! Knock it out of the park!!!!!!

Editing SYNERGY!

Paul and I are like 2 peas in a pod in the editing room. We both challenge each other with ideas and are open to each others thoughts and suggestions. It is making the process of editing, which I'd always heard could be combative, quite pleasant. Paul has a directors eye, I mean he is at heart a director, and this helps immensely. He has a feel for this film similarly to my own and that is a gift that keeps giving in the editing room. I feel so secure to have him, Reza (when he returns from the Iran Film Festival), and Oliver editng this film.

Saturday, January 29, 2005

LA TRIP ---

I will be in LA the 9th-14th to support the artist we anticipate using throughout the film. She has a showcase there on the 11th and rehearsal sessions on the 9th and 10th. I met her several weeks ago here in Orlando and she is delightful. I can't wait to hear her song "The Way Back Home." She is a unique up and coming artist.....can't wait to see her!!!!

1/28 -- EDITOR ASSEBLAGE CONTINUES --

A great week in the editing room. We have put together the first 65 pages and we all are getting more and more excited about the process. OLIVER PETERS is doing just a fantastic job. He is lightening quick with the AVID EDITNG SYSTEM, and can incorporate any and all suggestions from Paul and I instantly. HE is so dog gone proficient!!! Yesterday was an eventful day in the oftentimes slow and unexciting editing room. ROGER MOORE from the ORLANDO SENTINEL visited us for several hours and observed the process along with our DP STEPHEN CAMPBELL before having to shoot off to another job he's working on (Steve is in HIGH demand). Even Co-Producer Alan Lilly made a guest appearance for a little bit before heading off to one of his many commerical engagements (presently Napa Auto Parts). It was so good to see him.

Sunday, January 23, 2005

Rough Assemblage ---

Oliver Peters has been at VCC for 3 days this past week and has already made a rough cut of the first 25 pages. I watched it this weekend and am very excited. I see the beginnings of something very special (of course I'm biased.) I will join Oliver and Paul tomorrow in the AM and we will forge ahead with the editing.

Saturday, January 22, 2005

MIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL (2005)
I am very excited to announce that I have been asked by the Florida Film Commission in Tallahassee to be a keynote speaker at the Miami Film Festival the weekend of Feb 5th, 6th, and 7th. I will be going down to Miami to speak about my experience making "The Way Back Home" in Florida and my decision to branch off from acting and tackle writing and producing. I am honored to be chosen and look so forward to this opportunity. A big thank you to Susan Albershardt in the Governor's Office for thinking of me!!!!

EDITING (THE WAY BACK HOME) --- POST HAS BEGUN!!!!!!!!

A rough assemblage of the film began yesterday after a post meeting with all the involved parties. Oliver Peters, Richard Achor, Steve Campbell, Ralph Clemente, Paul Sirmons, Alan Lilly, myself, and Will Baker also took a tour of the master dubbing stage at FULL SAIL. They (the FULL SAIL STAFF) are being kind enough to let us break the stage in..it is the newest state of the art facility in the country (truly amazing). I am so excited about bringing our film over there to touch it up in ways we budgetarily were not going to be able to do. THANKS FULL SAIL!!!!! This film is continuing to resemble a true "community effort."

Tuesday, January 18, 2005

ACTOR UPDATE ---

Our own AMY LANDERS who played the role of Justine in THE WAY BACK HOME has been cast to guest star on the NBC comedy "JOEY" starring MATT LEBLANC. Look for her on the VALENTINE'S EPISODE!!! CONGRATS AMY!!!!

Friday, January 14, 2005

MARKETING & DISTRIBUTION (2005) --

Last night Paul and I met with a group of ROLLINS COLLEGE CRUMMER BUSINESS STUDENTS who are going to assist us with developing a MARKETING MODEL for the film... and our company. It was a fantastic meeting (over BarBQue of course), and I believe their thoughts and research will prove to be invaluable. We feel so fortunate to have been approached by LISA KAVIANI (one of the business students and also a FULL SAIL employee) with this possibility and we look forward to a wonderful collaboration with Rollins College in this next phase of the film process. Okay enough business language and niceties....WE'RE PSYCHED to work with ROLLINS!!!!

THE FIRST (The Way Back Home) MEETING of 2005 --

Paul, Sherry and I met today at Valencia to discuss our post production schedule in relation to our budget/finances. We desperately want to dive into post production and to do so we need to get back a lot of the deposit money that we had to shell out in the beginning. Sherry Sirmons has done a FANTABULOUS job watching over our money like a hawk and it has given me incredible comfort to not have to worry about that aspect of our production. Our aim and goal is to keep the momentum going and get this film edited in a timely fashion.

EDITING NEWS -- POST PRODUCTION

I miss the daily updates informing everyone of the "film goings ons.". Spoke with Reza last night and he misses the whole cast and crew himself. He will be joining Paul, Oliver, and I here in Florida the middle of January for editing. We are all very excited to get into postproduction and cut this film.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

I have so much to be thankful for this Christmas. It is the morning after Christmas and I woke up feeling such immense feelings of gratitude. A lot of it has to do with the actual film and finally beginning to feel that i can take a breather and enjoy the Holidays. But I have to admit most of it has to do with just being back home in Florida. Knowing that I am here in Orlando, with my family, developing business relationships, meeting unbelievable people daily, doing exactly what I believe i am supposed to be doing is overwhelming. I'm still pinching myself.

I spoke with Reza last night and he is as excited as I am to get going with the editing process. We will begin the 2nd week of January. Everybody have a wonderful holiday season with family and friends and a HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR!!!!! Michael

MY PRODUCING PARTNER (PAUL SIRMONS) ---

I want you all to know something about what i've learned INDEPENDENT Fimmaking to be about. Last Friday night, the night before our final day of shooting, my partner PAUL SIRMONS, found out we were about 1,000 feet short of 35mm film. As it happened, the day before we had shot more footage as a result of gorgeous light to be taken advantage of. Anyway, Paul took it upon himself to find 35mm film. He found it in MIAMI and drove all night to get 2 cannisters of film so we could finish this film. His lovely wife and our film's ACCOUNTANT (SHERRY...another godsend), joined him for the arduous all night trip to have film ready for a 9AM shoot. I kid you not, there was not ONE OUNCE of frustration, blame, NOTHING...despite being at the end of an exhausting process. They did what needed to be done. These ACTS are the things that make INDEPENDENTS special, unique, and worth following. They are full of blood, sweat, and tears. I am so grateful to have Paul and Sherry in my life and supporting me in this journey.

SUNDAY ORLANDO SENTINEL ---

Roger Moore captured this film in the Sunday paper in remarkable fashion. This was truly an amazing feat to pull off and he not only recognized that but highlighted ALL the people who had to pull together to make this happen. Roger's angle was so smart (Reza's band of guerilla filmmakers).... and that was what it often felt like. We worked as a team and made a beautiful feature film in 23 days. I still don't know how to express my feelings concerning the love, support, and hard work of literally 75 people!!!!! What an accomplishment.....

Sunday, December 19, 2004

IT'S A WRAP!!!!!

Filming ended at Palmer's Feed Store in Downtown Orlando. The first phase of this unbelievable experience has come to a close. It was an emotional day with lots of hugs.

The wrap party will take place at 8pm Sunday night at Colonial Lanes behind the Colonial Plaza. All who are interested and have supported this project...feel free to join.

MORE SANFORD FILMING --

Today we shot at RUBY DEE'S home in Sanford. RUBY is blowing me away with each scene she films. Truly fabuluous!!!! Mayor Lesard stopped by along with local friend and supporter John Williams of Budweiser and the Wayne Dentsch Distributorship in Sanford. I have been advised that Budweiser beer is the drink of choice for the wrap party (a good thing considering we had no beer budget). TESSIE SANTIAGO and myself did a lovely walk n'talk scene along the Sanford Riverwalk in FRIGID temperatures. She was a champ and it was a beautiful shot walking along the St. John's River. Back in Sanford tomorrow for more filming at Maude's house....before finishing the last 2 days in Orlando. SUNDAY ORLANDO SENTINEL --- keep an eye out for the article on THE WAY BACK HOME! Roger Moore was on set again (5 times now) interviewing Ruby today. We are so fortunate to have Roger's interest as it is sooo important to include the local community in what we are doing with this film. Thanks again, Roger!

DAY 18 -- Chindahl Home

A FABULOUS, PRODUCTIVE DAY. We are ahead of schedule and just cooking. Reza picked up some additional shots, adding to an already surprising amount of coverage. Tomorrow is our last day at Lake Sybelia....

The home I have referred to on this site as the Kennedy home is more commonly known to the family as the Chindahl home. Mrs. Margary Kennedy has been absolutely wonderful and sooo kind to let us film at her lovely home. I am well aware it has not been easy...but Mrs. Kennedy and her home are such a big part of this project. Without her kindness, her son's kindness, Connie, Earlene, and Sheila...this would not be happening and the vision I had for this film would not be attained. I am so thankful for their support and wish them all the best this Holiday season fron not only myself but from the whole CAST AND CREW of "THE WAY BACK HOME."

DINNER DATE with JULIE HARRIS and RUBY DEE ---

I arrived to pick up JULIE AND RUBY for dinner tonight and they were in the lobby rehearsing intently. They were discussing their scenes, reading the lines, entrenched in the material. I felt so many things in that moment. Sheer joy that such respected talent was delving into and investing so much into a script I had written, and humility at the task at hand. Making a film brings much responsibility and doing a film like this about values and goodness must be treated with extra special care. After dinner we went back to their rooms and spent more time discussing their major scenes and it was something I will never forget. In the AM, Julie and I will act together again as we are doing the scenes where she shows me my room for the first time in eight years. Can't wait!!

Friday, December 10, 2004

RUBY DEE IN ORLANDO ---

RUBY DEE has arrived and begins filming next week. She is absolutely lovely and so incredibly excited about being here. It is an honor to have her here and the thought of her working with JULIE HARRIS makes this project even more special to me.

ART DEPARTMENT NEWSFLASH ---

I am amazed daily by our ART DEPARTMENT. ORVIS RIGSBY our Production Designer is working miracles with a limited budget along with Art Director NICK FARRANTELLO and Set Decorator DEBBIE WITT. I watch them working nonstop...not only in-between takes....but during takes...as they prepare for following scenes (even Orvis' wife Karen assists). They truly work wonders and this process has enlightened me to the skill and artistry of those in the ART DEPARTMENT. Reza, myself, and Paul are so pleased at the LOOK of this film so far. The dailies are truly inspiring and we are getting what we had hoped to get. Thanks Guys (and Girls)!!!!
